I found this file probably a couple of years ago but didn’t have a need to edit it until this year when I made the website for Lindsay’s French classes. The flash program is fairly simple in design and pretty straight forward as far as functionality. It’s design premise is geared more towards classroom review but can be used by the independent student.

The flash game loads a separate text file which holds all of the necessary questions, answers and point values. Naturally, you can change all of these values to whatever you deem important.

For those who are curious, it has been recoded to look for the text file in a relative path structure instead of just assuming the file is in the same (root) folder as the jeopardy game. Apparently, flash has a hard time finding paths with php/SQL driven sites like joomla and wordpress.

In any case, jeopardy works just as well outside of the web as an executable file as in the web as an embedded object (swf).

For a demo, click here and type in “chp2″ without the quotes.

In my ever constant vigilance against comment and blog spam, I stumbled across Project Honeypot and found some interesting techniques to prevent spambots from harvesting your email. The technique is called “Address Munging” and there are many ways to implement email obfuscation. Apparently, some of these techniques will block up to 85% of the current computers running spambots. More sophisticated harvesters will be able to “break” the munging and still steal your email address.

I would argue that 15% is a lot better than 100% and have effectively implemented some of the techniques presented. An ingenious method that does not require images or scripts is hiding your address(es) under ASCII code. Using ASCII makes it a little tougher for harvesters to get your email without sacrificing readability/usability. Below is the script I found to mung your email address completely into ASCII code.

For example:
ted@example.com becomes
&#116;&#101;&#100;&#64;&#101;&#120;&#97;&#109;&#112;&#108;&#101;&#46;&#99;&#111;&#109;

(Please note: I will never store or record any email addresses you enter here.)

This script will turn anything into ASCII code. The best way to use it is to mung your “mailto:” reference as well. For those that know coding, when you link your email address, it’s done using the html command:

<a href=”mailto:ted@example.com”>ted@example.com</a>

Munging using ASCII code can turn it into something horrific looking but effective in deterring harvesters:

<a href=”&#109;&#97;&#105;&#108;&#116;&#111;&#58;&#116;&#101;&#100;&#64;&#101;&#120;
&#97;&#109;&#112;&#108;&#101;&#46;&#99;&#111;&#109;”>
&#116;&#101;&#100;&#64;&#101;&#120;&#97;&#109;&#112;
&#108;&#101;&#46;&#99;&#111;&#109;</a>

It is important to note that you must be editing in HTML for ASCII code to work.

Other, more simple, techniques involve simply changing some characters into words. The symbol ‘@’ becomes ‘(at)’ or ‘.’ becomes ‘(dot)’. Unfortunately, most harvesters can still find these addresses easily while making it more difficult for the end user. More advanced techniques implement javascript and text logo images.

One more useful tip is to italicize the email characters ‘@’ and ‘.’ making your email address ted@example.com. This makes it copy-able and aids in deterring harvesters.

For those wordpress bloggers, plugins like Akismet and AVH do wonders. My word of advice is to use multiple detectors and blockers to avoid getting comment spammed. Invisible scripts that check for machines is very useful (but requires Javascript to be turned on in order to comment).

I hope some of this information helps all of you!

I was watching Rumble in the Bronx the other day and if you’ve seen it you know that during the end credits there is a gag reel showing some of the funny things that happen and also the dangerous stunts that are performed. Recently, I also watched Chocolate, a Thai action movie with advanced stunt and fight choreography. Like Rumble in the Bronx, they showed a gag reel showcasing the fighting and stunts. All I have to say is wow. These stunt people seriously put themselves into some serious situations when they agree to a choreographed fight.

Watching these clips makes you appreciate the abuse they put their bodies through in order for you to enjoy an action-packed movie. With demand higher than ever for even more outlandish and altogether superhuman stunts, I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a shortage of people willing to subject themselves to this unique brand of self-torture. That being said, I don’t actually believe it myself. There will always be people wanting to get their name out there and to be the next Jackie Chan or Jet Li. In order for them to do so, they have to agree to do these insane stunts.

Would I be willing to do it? I don’t think I’d want to fall on my head if the scene required it, but some of those stunts actually look fun. Then again, I’m nuts and love all things Martial Arts so… yeah. Here’s the stunt clip from Chocolate so that you understand the insanity required to do these things.

And as an added bonus: A clip of me getting kicked in the face about a year ago.

We all know the USPS service is sub-par when it comes to packages but (let’s face it) cheaper than Fed-Ex and UPS.

Anyway, we got one of the packages we ordered for Christmas today and I thought it’d be fun to check the tracking to see where (according to the post office) it was. It should be known that I’m not allowed to open any packages since there’s stuff I’m not allowed to see. Fortunately, the package has its tracking number without my having to go look it up on the Amazon account. Here’s what I found when I looked it up:

And here’s the package as proof of delivery:

Go figure. Terrible service. Just terrible.

End Rant.

I know I missed last week and that’s my fault. With all the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, I simply forgot to write even an update

That leads me to this week’s tip:

Stay committed.

Since the holiday season is upon us, we all tend to relax in our workout routines and lose focus. For one reason or another, we tend to make up excuses why we don’t have to exercise during the sandwiched holidays of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year’s. I understand completely. The weather is getting colder, there’s a lot of delicious food to eat and it’s just enjoyable to spend time with friends and family. You don’t have to do a lot, go jogging or spend a day shopping (the hours on your feet and walking around is exercise enough). The worst things to do are gorge on food and do nothing for a month. As tempting as that can be, you will lose everything you worked for up to that point. You will have wasted all your muscle, cardio, toning – whatever. You will have to start nearly from scratch – I doubt any of us would want that.

So let’s make an agreement. You stay committed and focused and I will do the same – and keep up on my blogging. Deal? Deal.

An earlier movie directed by Wilson Yip, with fight choreography by Donnie Yen (who also happens to star in the movie).

I’ll start off by saying that Dragon Tiger Gate seems to be an answer to Hollywood’s success with comic book adaptations. This particular movie is based upon the popular Chinese comic Oriental Heroes (龍虎門). Since I have never read the comic book series, I can only comment on the movie’s quality.

The movie itself gives credence to Wilson Yip’s creativity and give you a better understanding of how he has developed his art of camera placement and scene design. Each scene is well crafted and the artwork gives you a sense of comic book flair and adds to pull you further into the world of these heroes.

Unfortunately, I am one of those people that prefer to watch the movie in it’s original language (netflix streams english dubbing) because I like to hear the subtle changes in the character’s voice that you don’t generally hear in the dubbing. I also would just prefer to hear the original character’s voice – especially when you already know what they sound like. Additionally, dubbing usually doesn’t give you the proper meaning for words that subbing is typically able to present. If you ever compare the same movie with dubbing vs subbing, you’ll notice that there’s a fair bit of discrepancy between translations. I’m in the crowd that thinks that subbing gives you a better understanding of what they’re actually saying and adds more to the movie.

All that aside, the movie is pretty well done with some spectacular fight scenes. Well done, Donnie Yen. There’s some wire-fu but with a movie that is based off a Chinese comic book, I expected that. The CG is well done and not over-the-top gimmicky.

As far as martial art styles, Wilson Yip does a good job tying in old-style Chinese martial arts wizardry and strange powers with new action-packed modern style fight sequences. You’ll know what I’m talking about when you see it. Think back to Iron Monkey and Kung Fu Hustle. Remember the odd and quirky powers some of them had? Dragon Tiger Gate, though not quirky, makes these powers seem kind of cool and modern with the help of CG.

I think the best part was seeing Wah Yuen again as the Master. If any of you remember Kung Fu Hustle, you’ll know him as the Landlord. He was, by far, my favorite character in that movie.

Overall, I give this movie an 8/10 for entertainment value, cool looking background art & CG, a great mix of the old and new, and making me want to go learn some fun tricks.
